ART IN THE PARK - NORTHAMPTON

21 MAY - 3 JUNE

Since 1961, Northampton Museum staff encouraged artists to brighten up Abington Park with their artwork. The Art in the Park event held in Northampton for the last 50 years is one of the very few open-air exhibitions in the country. Each year, hundreds of artists descend on Abington Park to showcase their finest works of art, and this year we will celebrate 50 years of doing so.

Colombian artist, Natalia Maude will be presenting her most recent work at ART IN THE PARK 2011 in Northampton.

The exhibition will take place at Abington Museum on 21 May until 3 July 2011.

Charity event
CHILDREN OF THE ANDES SPONSORED WALK

SUN 1 MAY 2011 - RICHMOND PARK

The charity Children of the Andes (COTA) is organising a 10 mile sponsored walk along the River Thames on May 1st to raise funds for their work with Colombia’s most vulnerable children.

COTA is a small UK registered charity supporting Colombia's most vulnerable children. COTA does this by supporting local projects which provide education, support vulnerable families, help make communities safer and help young people develop the skills and confidence they need to build independent and fulfilling lives. Last year over 4000 children were reached.

The COTA Thames Walk is a day to relax and exercise; enjoying the stunning scenery of the river Thames, making friends and sharing a picnic with other COTA supporters.

The event will start at 11 am and will take at least four hours. The walk starts in Richmond and follows the Thames Pathway to Teddington Lock, before heading into the regal wilderness of Richmond Park via Ham Gate. The walk continues on to the picnic stop near the magnificent Isabella Plantation – a great opportunity to relax, meet new people, enjoy some Latin-American music and enjoy the natural beauty of the plantation – before heading home.

This year, COTA aims to raise £10,500 through the walk. COTA is asking all participants to aim for a minimum of £50 sponsorship. Anyone who manages to raise £75 or more will be automatically entered in a prize draw (including Afternoon Tea for 2 at luxury 5* London hotel, The Dorchester; ‘Try Diving’ experience for 2 from London School of Diving and £50 gift card from Next, see their website for information about other prizes). The best fundraiser will have the opportunity to choose their own prize!

If you would like to attend, please register as soon as possible with COTA.

Academic Seminar

"VIOLENCE AND DRUG-TRAFFICKING IN LATIN AMERICA: IMPLICATIONS FOR THE UK"

THU 5 MAY 2011

ICSR and The War Studies Department, King's College London invites you to a panel discussion with:

• H.E. Mauricio Rodriguez Munera, Colombian Ambassador to London

• H.E. Acisclo Valladares Molina, Guatemalan Ambassador to London

• H.E. Eduardo Medina Mora, Mexican Ambassador to London

• Minister Alexandre Parola, Brazilian Embassy in London

• Mr Martin Barnes, Director Drugscope, United Kingdom

Moderated By: Dr Domitilla Sagramoso, King's College London

Latin America has witnessed a significant upsurge in drug-related violence over the past decade. Whereas in the 1970s and 1980s, the Caribbean was the primary conduit for South American drugs destined to the United States, today, Mexico, Central America, Ecuador and Venezuela are becoming important transit routes, not just to the USA but also to Europe – the second largest consuming-market of cocaine in the world. Production patterns are also changing. As the Colombian Government succeeded over the past decade in exercising greater control over its territory and reducing the areas under coca cultivation, new cocaine production areas have emerged in Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. Despite significant efforts by countries in the region to counter the illegal trade, the situation remains dire, especially as the demand for cocaine among consumers in the developed world - Europe in particular – continues to grow. Drug-trafficking negatively affects both consuming and transiting countries – it contributes to state weakness, hampers economic growth, undermines peace-building efforts, and fuels crime, conflict and civil wars. Consuming countries have therefore a shared responsibility together with producing countries to address the challenges posed by such a destabilising threat.

Venue:
King’s College London
Room K2.31, Second Floor
5pm - 7.30pm
